COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Crim will host the Halloween Hustle 5K and Kids Trick-or-Trot event on Oct. 25 at Crossroads Village.  ABC12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Artists have begun painting vibrant murals in Bay City and Flint as part of projects led by groups like United We Go and the Flint Public Art Project. Gina Anayana said the Friendship Wall project invites art from local and global creators—marking a new chapter for public art in both cities.  Mid Michigan NOW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Oct. 21, volunteers and staff from the Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy began transforming a former General Motors plant into a 300-acre nature preserve by planting over 100 trees donated by Bay Landscaping at the future Saginaw River Headwaters Recreation Area. The group will host an open house on Oct. 23 and plans to add 500 more trees by next week—aiming to improve the region's canopy coverage.  WNEM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mental health providers will meet at Saginaw Valley State University’s Gilbertson Hall on Nov 7 from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. for the Great Lakes Bay Region Mental Health Provider Summit (registration is $50) where Jane Harness will address youth mental health (focusing on social media impacts).  MLive
  • On Oct. 20, Bay City officials approved a resolution urging the state legislature to ban kratom sales to minors after three fatal overdoses were reported in Bay, Midland and Tuscola counties. Dr. William Morrone said low doses of kratom boost energy but higher doses mimic morphine—leading to dangerous withdrawal symptoms and addiction.  MLive
  • Michigan lawmakers plan to limit Medicaid coverage for weight loss drugs to those classified as morbidly obese and individuals with Type 2 diabetes as part of the new state budget directive to control costs. The changes will take effect January 1, 2026, and affected Medicaid beneficiaries will receive advance notice before any adjustments apply.  ABC12
  • McLaren Bay Region broke ground on McLaren Bay West—a $53.6 million redevelopment of its former special care site that will become a multispecialty campus with a freestanding emergency department and expanded diagnostic services. Construction is set to begin before the end of the year with the first patient treated in spring and the emergency department opening in summer.  WNEM
  • Brian's House, a hospice guest house in Essexville that served over 1,000 terminally ill patients since 2017, closed due to a funding shortage and will reopen by Christmas if donations meet its goals. The organization plans to change its sliding fee system to a set fee while hosting fundraisers at Willew Lounge & State Theatre in Bay City.  ABC12
