- ➤ Butter Crust Bakery in Bridgeport Township reopened on Oct. 3—six days after a car crashed into its building on Sept. 27, and the shop thanked the police, fire crews, and many customers for their help. MLive
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ School officials at Saginaw United High unveiled the new football field and fieldhouse during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct 3 — the public toured the state-of-the-art facility before the Homecoming game against Bay City Central. The field features artificial turf with custom markings and a large digital screen for scores — crews continue work on additional sports fields that will open in spring. MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Bay City 4th Ward Commissioner Ben Tenney will introduce a resolution at Monday’s meeting that directs $5 million from a bridge lease to repair streets — half of the funds will be reserved while the Department of Public Works must create a repair plan in 30 days — to address many roads in fair to poor condition. - ➤ Lawmakers approved a new road funding package on October 3 that will add $1.1 billion to Michigan’s transportation budget for fiscal year 2026 and eventually generate $1.8 billion per year by shifting the gas tax and introducing a wholesale marijuana tax starting January 1—this plan also allocates funds for local roads, bridge repairs, public transit and a study on a mileage-based fee system. Gov. Whitmer still must sign the agreement to make it official. MLive
- ➤ Michigan and 19 other states filed a lawsuit against the Department of Justice to block a rule that stops federal funds from paying for legal help for undocumented immigrants who are victims of crime—arguing it violates the spending clause of the Constitution. WNEM
- ➤ Michigan lawmakers approved a new state budget overnight after a bipartisan deal and sent the bills to Gov. Whitmer for review. The budget allocates nearly $2 billion for road repairs and record school funding while cutting waste — the governor has not yet set a signing date. ABC12
