  • Mid-Michigan is hosting a busy weekend of community events as Applefest continues in Fenton, Disney on Ice runs in Saginaw, and the Delta College 5K Color Fun Run in Bay City begins Saturday at 9 a.m. SVSU’s 9/11 Heroes Run on Sept. 14 will honor first responders — many festivals and markets across the region offer chances for families to join in.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Vassar Public Schools teacher was placed on leave on Thursday after posting a comment about activist Charlie Kirk’s death on social media — officials said the remark did not reflect school board views. School leaders did not provide details or a timetable for a decision on the teacher’s future.  ABC12

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The fall foliage outlook shows trees starting to change color as cooler nights arrive—experts note that a heat wave and warm days could delay peak colors. Forecasts say most trees will display their hues gradually over the next one to two weeks—guiding when to best view the season's display.  Mid Michigan NOW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State regulators on Sept. 11 ordered major utilities to credit customers $42 automatically after outages lasting four days—up from the previous $40 credit. DTE and Consumers Energy will now apply the rule during extended or repeated outages.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Two new laws went into effect this year that require all schools to have an emergency plan with AEDs and CPR-trained coaches to save lives during a cardiac arrest. A student collapsed during track tryouts at Allen Park and, although quick action helped save her life, some schools still face funding challenges while Bay County shows few HEARTSafe awards.  WNEM

  • Frankenmuth opened its TVC volleyball season on Wednesday—beating Bay City John Glenn with set scores of 25-21, 25-16, 25-16.  MLive
