CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Bay County Sheriff’s deputies said 26-year-old Tyler Allaben was charged with beating and kidnapping his Texas ex-girlfriend at 6:40 a.m. on July 29 at a Mount Forest Township home—witnesses said they saw him chase her with a knife. MLive
- ➤ A judge bound over Saginaw man Shawn D. Meredith Jr.'s trial after he was charged with fatally shooting Bay City man Kane E. Crockett outside a South End bar during a robbery gone wrong on March 15—defense attorneys challenged key witness credibility during his preliminary hearing on Sept. 8. MLive
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Bay Area Community Foundation will host a free college aid workshop called 'Launch Your Future' at Delta College Planetarium in downtown Bay City on Thursday, Nov. 13 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.—the event will help both high school seniors and adult learners complete the FAFSA and learn about scholarships with two $1,000 awards available. - ➤ Local business and education leaders announced a new partnership on Sept.8 aimed at boosting manufacturing careers in the Great Lakes Bay Region—offering STEM training in semiconductors and advanced manufacturing for 10,000 students starting with the 2025-2026 school year. MLive
- ➤ The Michigan Department of Education released standardized test results from last spring showing that many Bay County schools had less than 30% of 11th graders proficient in social studies and science on tests including M-STEP, SAT and PSAT—Bay City Central reported 29.8% in social studies and 18.9% in science. Some statewide scores saw small gains in a few subjects while others dropped slightly compared to previous years. MLive
- ➤ Great Lakes Bay Regional Alliance, Bay-Arenac Intermediate School District and Hemlock Semiconductor announced a partnership to expand tech and advanced manufacturing programs for mid-Michigan PreK-12 students beginning the 2025-2026 school year—this effort, funded by a $269,000 grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and the MiSTEM Network, will serve at least 10,000 students across eight counties. - ➤ Mark T. Zanotti, 72, was sworn in as Bay City’s new 5th Ward commissioner on Sept. 8, replacing Rachelle Hilliker at a meeting at Bay City Hall—bringing the city commission to eight members with only the 3rd Ward seat remaining vacant. His term runs through December 2026. MLive
