- ➤ Consumers Energy is warning Bay City customers about scammers who are calling and emailing with spoofed numbers while demanding payment with gift cards—methods the company does not use. WNEM
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ A documentary about the Bay City Central and Bay City Western football rivalry will screen on Friday, Sept. 26 at 9 p.m. at the State Theater downtown during the Hell’s Half Mile Film & Music Festival—it will include a Q&A with the filmmakers. MLive
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The Bureau of Labor Statistics said Michigan’s unemployment rate was 5.3%—about 270,000 people—making it the fourth highest in the nation. In our area, Bay City’s rate was 7.1% while Flint and Saginaw saw even more job losses, and experts blame the state’s focus on making cars, tourism and federal layoffs for these high numbers. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Bay City Compensation Commission voted on Aug. 28 to keep current salaries for the mayor and city commissioners because of fewer meetings and turnover—Mayor Girard and Commission President Alex Dewitt said they support the decision. MLive
LIFESTYLE NEWS
- ➤ Michigan’s deer hunting season will begin on Sept. 13 and 14 with a Liberty Hunt for licensed youth and will hold early antlerless firearm hunting on Sept. 20 and 21. Archery starts on Oct. 1 until Nov. 14 and resumes on Dec. 1 until Jan. 1—muzzleloading is scheduled from Dec. 5 to 14—while extended archery in Huron and Tuscola Counties runs until Jan. 31. WNEM
