BUSINESS NEWS

  • Michigan Sugar Co. worked with Bay City officials to set up new routes for its sugarbeet trucks during the harvest season as Lafayette Bridge is closed — trucks will use Liberty Bridge and Midland Street from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Veterans Memorial Bridge after 7 p.m. while growers prepare to harvest beets from 140,000 acres starting in late August.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • A Bay County father, 22-year-old Zachary M. Touchtone, is charged with first-degree child abuse after an autopsy found his 5-month-old son died from a hard hit nearly two years ago—he appeared in court on Aug. 18 with a bond set at $250,000.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Bay City Commission approved a five-year renewal deal with Axon Enterprise for body-worn cameras, costing about $300,000—set to start after the current contract ends on Sept. 30. Annual payments will rise from $55,346 in fiscal 2026 to $64,747 by fiscal 2030, ensuring ongoing public safety documentation.  MLive
  • Bay City commissioners voted 7 to 1 on Monday to direct City Manager Dana Muscott to craft a policy that bans police from serving no-knock search warrants—officials noted that the department already avoids such warrants out of safety concerns.  ABC12
  • Residents who meet income guidelines can apply for the Home Heating Credit until September 30 to help offset heating bills this winter — the program averaged $180 in assistance last year and offers free tax preparation through local nonprofits.  ABC12
