- ➤ The Mid Michigan Community Action Agency upgraded 150 homes at Baytown Family Neighborhood with a $2.6 million weatherization project—installing new furnaces, on-demand hot water heaters, sealed windows, extra insulation, updated light fixtures, and essential safety devices for 324 residents including seniors, children and people with disabilities. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Michigan State Police said a 28-year-old man was injured in a shooting on Friday when a pickup truck fired multiple rounds at his southbound car on I-75 near Hess Avenue — he drove to TA Travel Center in Bridgeport for help. WNEM
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Consumers Energy is pledging $2 million to help customers with unpaid summer energy bills and will distribute funds through THAW and the Salvation Army—customers must meet income and billing requirements to qualify. ABC12
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Bay Area Chamber of Commerce will host its annual State of Education luncheon on November 5 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Bay City-Riverfront where new school district leaders from Bay City Public Schools, Essexville-Hampton Public Schools, and Bay-Arenac ISD will share their plans for workforce readiness and business partnerships. - ➤ SVSU completed a 29 million dollar renovation of Brown Hall last week—adding 3,000 square feet and modern labs, classrooms, and an updated walkway that now connects it to Wickes Hall for its College of Arts and Behavioral Sciences. MLive
- ➤ Bay City Public Schools has updated its cellphone guidelines for students. Elementary and middle students must keep devices on silent mode and in lockers during school hours—high school students can use phones during passing time and lunch but must keep them silent in class. WNEM
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Bay City Commissioner Andrea Burney-Obershaw resigned on Aug. 18 before a vote on censure amid recall attempts and a domestic violence conviction—she announced her decision at City Hall. Her departure leaves the commission with seven members and a special meeting will be held on Aug. 23 to fill her seat. MLive
- ➤ MDOT said northbound I-75 bridge work in Bay County is delayed because of wet conditions + the Labor Day holiday; work is expected to begin on Sept. 8 and will add epoxy overlays on several bridges with up to two lane closures in each direction for a $400,000 project. WNEM
