- ➤ On Aug 5, an air quality advisory was in effect as voters in Flint and nearby areas cast ballots in local races and MDOT began road work on I-75 in Bay County with lane closures set to finish next Thursday. County health officials offered free kids screenings at North Michigan Avenue and Bay City State Park hosted a back-to-school splash from 3-6 p.m.—residents also joined National Night Out at a local soccer complex to meet first responders. - ➤ Michigan Cream & Sugar Ice Cream Co. will host its popular Stuff Your Stanley event on Aug. 11 by filling a (30-40 oz) tumbler with up to four scoops of small-batch ice cream for $10 at both its Bay City and Saginaw locations. The event offers a selection of signature and limited-edition flavors while supporting local Michigan farm families. MLive

- ➤ Appledore IV from Bay City will join two tall ships at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center in Alpena for the Shipwreck Century festival from August 14-17 — the event will offer 90-minute sails for $55 a person along with free deck tours and family activities. MLive
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Canadian wildfire smoke and a high-pressure system kept Michigan under a haze that forced an Air Quality Alert Tuesday and led most monitors to show unhealthy readings. Models showed the high-pressure cell left Tuesday night — letting south winds clear the smoke on Wednesday even as heat and humidity increased. MLive

- ➤ COPOCO Community Credit Union and ELGA Credit Union merged on Aug 1 after members approved the union on July 21— their union now serves over 108,000 members across 16 branches with a staff of over 300 and holds $1.7 billion in assets. Full system integration will be completed by spring 2026— members will receive regular updates as the process advances. MLive

- ➤ Bay City commissioners returned a resolution to ban no-knock search warrants to Commissioner Ben Tenney—so he can fix technical issues and gather input from public safety officials after a close 5—4 vote. The measure is designed to formalize current practice and aims to balance officer safety with constitutional rights. MLive
- ➤ Five years after dam failures, the Four Lakes Task Force released a timeline for dam construction and lake refilling in Edenville and Sanford.
