COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bay City's Vet's Park will host the 11th annual Urban Salvage Vintage Markets on Aug. 9 and 10, where over 100 vendors will offer vintage, handmade, and salvaged items with live music + food trucks. Admission is $5 with free entry for veterans and children 12 and younger + part of the proceeds will benefit the Bay Veterans Foundation and the Bay Valley Garden Club.  MLive
  • On Sunday afternoon, protesters gathered outside the Bay County Building to challenge Bay City Bridge Partners’ toll policies and ask for lower tolls and free crossings to help residents who need the bridges–including those with health issues. SBDSA leaders said local residents have faced billing problems that sometimes delay access to essential care.  ABC12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bay City will host its 3rd Annual City of Mural Community Festival from Aug. 21 to Aug. 25, where six artists will paint four large murals on buildings, a park, and a high school wall. A new permanent Friendship Wall will open with a ribbon cutting at Wenonah Park on Aug. 22—Legacy Coffee House will host meet-and-greet events on Aug. 23 and 24.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State police reported that the OK2SAY program broke its record by receiving more than 11,600 anonymous tips in 2024—a 20% increase over 2023. Mary Gager Drew (the program administrator) said some tips involved weapons and over 1,600 mentioned suicide concerns, which will guide efforts to keep students safe.  WNEM
  • Bay City commissioners postponed their vote on a resolution to ban no-knock search warrants after a narrow 5‑4 vote and concerns from Public Safety Director Caleb Rowell that the change could hamper cooperation with Michigan State Police. Commissioner Benjamin Tenney—who authored the measure—will rework the resolution to address technical issues and incorporate further input from the Department of Public Safety.  MLive
  • The Michigan Department of Transportation has closed the northbound lanes of I-75 at the Zilwaukee Bridge for maintenance work until November 14—drivers must follow detours that direct northbound traffic onto I-675 as part of the $2.9 million project, which includes expansion joint repair, deck patching, and resealing.  ABC12
  • Maintenance work on the Zilwaukee Bridge will close northbound I-75 lanes between Kochville and Wadsworth roads starting Monday through November 14. MDOT will invest $2.9 million to repair the expansion joint, patch the deck, and reseal parts—drivers will use detours via Wadsworth Road and I-675 to reach affected ramps.  Mid Michigan NOW
