Good morning, Bay City. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 17th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After deadly flooding at Camp Mystic in Texas killed 134 people on July 4, Camp Fish Tales in Pinconning updated its emergency plans to better protect campers and staff. The nonprofit camp now uses walkie-talkies and emergency codes—like code red for medical alerts—to respond quickly during severe weather and water emergencies.  ABC12

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A Michigan clock company in Zeeland said it is ending production this year due to tariffs and a weak housing market—forcing a phase-out of nearly 99 years of clockmaking and putting around 200 jobs at risk. The firm will remain to sell its inventory in 2026—while efforts to find a buyer have so far not succeeded.  Mid Michigan NOW

CRIME NEWS

  • A masked man robbed Independent Bank on Euclid Avenue on Monday just before 12:30 p.m. by ordering people to the ground and taking money from the register before fleeing—he is now in custody and no one was hurt.  ABC12

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Residents in Mundy Township felt relieved as SanDisk pulled its $63 billion semiconductor plant plan, canceling the megasite project near Hill Road. The community now hopes officials will develop the cleared land into a safe, beneficial use—despite earlier demolitions and widespread local concerns.  ABC12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Southeast Michigan Dive Group began a search in Lake Huron when a sonar image spotted an object that may match a Cessna 150 that crashed in July 2011 — law enforcement dive teams from local, state and federal agencies spent two hours underwater facing technical issues and will continue efforts to confirm the target and possibly recover the pilot's belongings.  WNEM
  • On July 15, representatives Kristen McDonald Rivet, Tony Wied, and Max Miller passed the Great Lakes Icebreaker Act of 2025 through the House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure to help keep winter shipping lanes clear and protect midwestern jobs. The bill requires the Coast Guard to create a design and cost plan for a new heavy-class icebreaker and to review the current fleet’s performance over a five-year pilot program — steps aimed at strengthening the regional economy.  WNEM
