COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Saginaw Bay Community Sailing Association teaches children as young as 8 to sail and build confidence on the water. Cecilia Keeler, who started learning to sail at age 10 and is now 14, is an assistant instructor sharing her skills with new learners.  MLive

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Three subcontractors were hospitalized Monday after suffering burns from an electrical mishap while working on a high voltage panel at the Mersen USA chemical plant on the city's south side—one is in critical condition.  MLive
  • On July 12 the crew of the 49-foot Amante 2 rescued Pete Pryce from rough Lake Huron waters after a 50-minute search in high winds, finding him clinging to a yellow buoy and using a life sling to pull him aboard so he could warm up and join the crew for the rest of the race.  MLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bay County businesses can enter a contest hosted by the Michigan Small Business Development Center to pitch ideas for using a $5,000 prize — with awards also ranging as low as $750 — after taking classes on finance and marketing. Registration is open until August 13 and past winners improved their operations using the prize funds.  Mid Michigan NOW

CRIME NEWS

  • In Bangor Township, a masked man with a pistol robbed the Independent Bank on Monday just before 12:30 p.m.—authorities said he fled with cash in a backpack.  Mid Michigan NOW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Consumers Energy announced that qualified electric and gas customers who have not received the full $500 annual benefit can now apply for extra state funds — new applicants may get up to $500 per service and those who already received aid can apply for the remaining balance until September 30.  WNEM
  • The Kawkawlin Township Fire Department faces funding troubles after state regulators invalidated a voter-approved millage because the ballot wording did not meet legal standards—officials will impose a special assessment to temporarily fund services. Township board members will hold public hearings this summer and ask voters to approve a revised millage in November.  ABC12
