  • Earl Bovia said that more people attended the Bay City Firework Festival this year than last—despite concerns about many people's tolls on their minds—and he expects next year's event to be even bigger to mark the USA's 250th anniversary.  Mid Michigan NOW
  • Bay City now has two farmers markets after an eight-year absence—one at 966 E. Midland St. open on Tuesdays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. until Oct. 7 and one at 409 1st St. open on Tuesdays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. until Oct. 21.  MLive

  • Chick-fil-A is looking to acquire a Bangor Township property at 4001 N. Euclid Ave. for its first Bay County restaurant—Mooney’s Ice Cream & Cakes reopened on State Street in Saginaw Township on July 2 with a new owner keeping a nearly 100-year tradition alive while other local businesses launch new spots and fresh concepts.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • James Palasty from Burton faces a hard choice after his 26-year-old daughter Felicia, who is non-verbal and has autism, aged out of Michigan’s special education program last month and lost the routine she needed. He has started a GoFundMe campaign to help move her to a special needs program in Massachusetts — a plan made difficult by limited funds.  Mid Michigan NOW

  • After assessments were approved, work resumed on Secord and Smallwood dams — reconstruction continued on three of the four dams damaged by the 2020 flooding disaster.  ABC12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Johns Hopkins says there are over 1,200 measles cases in the U.S. this year, with some found in Michigan. Health experts, including Dr. Farhan Bhatti, urge those eligible to get the MMR vaccine to stop the spread — nearly all cases are in people who are unvaccinated or whose vaccination status is unknown.  WNEM
  • Following the drowning of 15-year-old Timmie Favorite Jr. on July 5, the Children’s Grief Center shared tips for parents to help children grieve by allowing them to express their feelings through exercise or art—such as using a punching bag or engaging in creative projects—while remaining available for support.  WNEM
  • CMU Health has opened a new pediatric clinic in Saginaw at 3875 Bay Road, Suite 1-S and is accepting new patients from birth to 18 years old—Dr. Thomas Schomaker leads the clinic with certified pediatric nurse practitioners Lisa Jean and Katie Londos.  Mid Michigan NOW
