ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • In July 1897, an electric train in Bay City did not stop at an open bridge and plunged into the Saginaw River, killing seven people—this accident led to new safety regulations for Michigan railroads.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • Police are investigating an incident where a volunteer was hit by a motorcyclist at Veterans Memorial Park during the fireworks festival on Friday, July 4—organizers are working with local businesses to identify the person responsible.  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Consumers Energy announced it will upgrade 135 miles of its natural gas system—replacing old cast iron and steel pipelines across 15 communities including two projects in Bay City—with work handled by over 600 employees and contractors to keep gas service safe and reliable.  WNEM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bay City Commissioner Andrea Burney-Obershaw faces her fourth recall effort after the Bay County Election Commission approved a petition on July 7 from former commissioner Dennis Banaszak. If enough signatures are collected, the recall will go on the November ballot+the commissioner said she will appeal the decision and continue pushing her plan for affordable housing as a new residency rule is considered.  WNEM
  • The Michigan Professional Firefighters Union renewed its push for legislation that would let unions negotiate staffing levels as Bill 319 passed by the Senate in June now awaits House approval. Union President Matthew Sahr said the move is critical because the current staffing shortfall may mean a life-or-death situation — a concern raised during a recent Capitol protest.  Mid Michigan NOW
  • Bay City commissioners approved a resolution on July 7 that reaffirms elected officials must live in the wards they serve, passing it 7-1. Commissioner Andrea Burney-Obershaw said the measure targeted her because she splits her time between a Bay City home and a residence in Birch Run—she said she can sleep wherever she wants.  MLive
  • Bay City's 3rd Ward Commissioner Andrea Burney-Obershaw had recall language approved by the Bay County Election Commission on July 7—her fourth recall attempt following a December 2023 domestic violence conviction—and she plans to appeal the decision. Former Commissioner Dennis Banaszak filed the petition and has 180 days to collect the required signatures for the recall to appear on either the November ballot if signatures are met by August 1 or on a special ballot in May if not.  MLive
