CRIME NEWS

  • Former Auburn Public Works director Ashlie K. House—accused of embezzling between $2,300 and $2,500 for personal use—pleaded no contest via a Zoom hearing before Judge Jessie Scott Wood on June 23, and her case is now under legal review.  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Consumers Energy’s Brian Wheeler advised residents to use a fan before turning on air conditioning and to set the thermostat at 74 degrees or higher to lower energy bills during record heat, while Bill’s After Hours Heating and Cooling owner William Law said that cleaning the filter and spraying the unit may help improve cooling—steps that could avoid a service call.  WNEM
  • Oil prices fell below $70 a barrel after U.S. military strikes on nuclear sites in Iran eased a recent spike from nearly $80 + experts say the drop is starting to lower costs at the pump. In Michigan, analysts noted that regular gas prices dropped from $3.39 to about $3.23 per gallon + concerns over a possible shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz remain amid ongoing global tension.  Mid Michigan NOW

  • Laura Marie Kubit, an attorney with the Michigan Advocacy Program, was appointed by Bay City commissioners in a unanimous 6—0 vote on Monday, June 23, to serve the 1st Ward. Her term expires in December and she said she will focus on issues including affordable housing and infrastructure while the commission begins accepting applications for another vacancy.  MLive
  • Operation Safe Neighborhoods took away 850 illegal guns from people with criminal records as of June 23—Gov. Whitmer and state agents said the program, run by the Michigan Department of Corrections with local law enforcement, aims to cut gun violence on local streets.  WNEM

  • Michigan's Department of Health and Human Services warned residents to check on older people during the heat wave as more seniors went to the emergency room, and doctors advised staying hydrated and taking cool showers—simple steps to help keep everyone safe.  ABC12
