ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On June 18, 1976, Bay City’s Third Street Bridge (built in 1889) collapsed in five seconds when 60 feet of its swing span broke and plunged into the Saginaw River, sending sparks and twisted steel flying as operator Peter Homewood and his son fled amid long-standing warnings that the structure was unsafe. - ➤ Barney’s BakeHouse Bakery opened its new downtown location at 512 Saginaw Street on June 18th at 7 a.m. and featured expanded display cases and better parking while the first 400 customers received free cookies — owner Jarrid Weighman said the extra space will help show off a full range of in-house baked goods — celebrating 100 years of service. - ➤ An Auburn man pleaded guilty after he used a motorized wheelchair to enter a closed gas station early one July morning, stealing booze and cigarettes before setting the building on fire — now he faces at least five years in federal prison. MLive

- ➤ Bay City is accepting applications for the vacant 5th Ward City Commissioner seat that will serve the term ending Dec. 31, 2026—application packets are available at the City Manager’s Office or online and must be submitted by Aug. 4 by 4 p.m.—and candidates must live in the 5th Ward. WNEM
- ➤ Bay City will interview 11 candidates for the vacant 1st Ward commission seat at City Hall on June 23 at 5:30 p.m. They include former journalists and community leaders competing to fill the role left by Stephen Prince, who resigned earlier this year. MLive

- ➤ Local aquatics instructor Rob Hendry of the Dow Bay Area YMCA shared summer swim safety tips this week as many head to pools and lakes to beat rising 90° heat—he urged parents to put down phones and always keep one eye on the water—ensuring a safer experience for everyone. WNEM
