  • Local agencies in Bay City report that nearly 30% more families now need food and household supplies as the community still feels the effects of the pandemic and faces possible SNAP cuts. Leaders at Safe Harbor and Great Lakes Dream Center say funding and donations have dropped, forcing them to extend help to many who have never needed it before—especially among the working poor.  ABC12

CRIME NEWS

  • Michigan State Police warned residents today about scam texts falsely claiming to be from the Michigan DMV that allege an outstanding traffic ticket and demand payment — officials say the Secretary of State will not send money requests — and advised people to delete the messages.  WNEM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jordan Dice, a serial entrepreneur, bought the 87-year-old Court Street Theater in Saginaw and said he will begin fixing its cracked roof and updating the concession stand in July—mirroring work from his St. Laurent Brothers venue—to reopen the historic theater by fall.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bay City Public Schools Board of Education voted 4—3 on Monday, June 9 to lay off four staffers due to a $6.7M budget shortfall despite strong community protest. Audience members shouted 'shame on you' during the meeting as staff expressed shock and concern about the cuts.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Saturday at Grand Valley State University’s Meadows Course, two Jack Pine Conference golfers finished first and second at the Michigan high school boys golf state finals—Shepherd’s Christopher Crockett claimed the state title with a 70—75—145 score while Bullock Creek’s Colton Lower finished second with a 73—75—148 score.  MLive
