- ➤ Tuesday, June 3, saw the opening of the Bay Area Farmer’s Market on North Jefferson Street in downtown Bay City (opened by Downtown Bay City, the Jefferson Project, and the Bay City Co-Op) where shoppers could buy produce, meats, and treats. The market will run every Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. until Oct. 21. WNEM
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Justin J. Beavers (36) faced charges for fourth-degree arson, stalking, and malicious use of telecommunications services after he allegedly texted 'The devil is coming' to his girlfriend while driving with a gas can and lighter and threatened to kill and sexually assault a Bay City family by setting fire to a car on Sept. 14 (he is set to appear for a preliminary examination on June 18). GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Bay City Commission, known for beginning its meetings with a prayer for 70 years, may stop the tradition — a change proposed by Commissioner Alexander Dewitt — if the resolution passes. The vote is scheduled for June 16 — and several commissioners have already voiced strong opinions — as they weigh church and state matters. MLive

- ➤ Tick experts warned that Lyme disease cases increased by 168% over the last five years as more ticks survive winter and animal behavior has changed in Michigan. Residents are urged to use EPA registered repellent, wear long sleeves outdoors, and check themselves, their children and pets for ticks after being outside. WNEM
