CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Jordan Hill—accused of using fake documents to submit PPP loan applications in 2020 by claiming false payroll amounts and another person’s identity—was indicted on charges of wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and attempted wire fraud and released on a $10,000 unsecured bond, with his next court date pending. - ➤ Two teens were charged with carrying a concealed pistol while driving in a red Ford Explorer between Bay City Eastern High School and Handy Middle School after a call just before 7 a.m. on May 15 reported a handgun being waved near the school—one teen faces adult charges and the other is processed as a juvenile. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Gas prices in Michigan have risen by 12 cents a gallon ahead of Memorial Day with drivers paying an average of $3.18 while a Speedway in Lansing charges $3.29—nearby counties show prices from $3.20 to $3.30. WNEM
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Commissioners voted on May 19 to approve a timeline for repairing the defunct Fire Station 5—closed since July—on the west side, with proposals to be requested by November 7 and bidding set to finish by January 2026. City Manager Dana Muscott will secure the bids and funding needed to fix problems with the roof, water leaks, and other issues so the station can reopen. MLive
- ➤ State Rep. Mike Hoadley proposed a bill to sell the abandoned 604-bed Standish Maximum Correctional Facility 27 miles north of Bay City, a property closed in 2009 that he hopes will be repurposed to ease the local shortage of psychiatric beds—he held a hearing on May 15 and expects the bill will pass this session.
