EDUCATION NEWS

  • Saginaw educator Laticia Whitehead released a children’s picture book—You Can Be Anything!—that uses a classroom Career Week to inspire young students to explore various careers; the book is available for purchase through her website and Barnes and Noble.  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Storms on May 18 caused damage in Mid-Michigan, leaving downed trees and power lines. Crews worked Monday night to clear debris — Consumers Energy advises residents to keep a safe distance and have phones charged as more storms are possible today.  WNEM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • ITC will deploy helicopters to inspect high voltage power lines from May 27 through June 30, with Bay County flights scheduled from June 18 to 21 to check for worn equipment and vegetation hazards. Residents are advised that no report is needed if they see low flying helicopters during these routine inspections.  ABC12
  • Michigan State Police launched the Click It or Ticket campaign on Monday, May 18, enforcing seat belt laws through May 31. Officials say drivers caught without a seatbelt face a $65 fine as they urge extra caution ahead of Memorial Day weekend.  WNEM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Veterans and community members marched in Auburn as part of Ruck 18, carrying backpacks for 18 miles to raise awareness for veteran mental health + to support Blue Star Service Dogs that help veterans with PTSD + and brain injuries.  WNEM

  • Bay City's Athlete-of-the-Week for May 18 spotlights high school standouts including track star Navir Cleveland, pitcher Nathan Foret, and record-breaking pole vaulter Annabelle Werner. Readers can vote until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, May 21.  MLive
  • Bay City area high school track and field qualifiers were announced as results from regional and early meets have been posted, including events in Divisions 1 to 4 from local teams. Qualifiers from schools like Western and Clare will advance to the state finals in upcoming competitions.  MLive
  • Bay City area high school girls soccer teams have been paired for the 2026 MHSAA postseason tournaments, with Division 2 matchups starting May 20 at Bay City Western and other divisions scheduled through May 29. Historical district champions were also listed in the announcement.  MLive
