EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Saginaw Career Complex Auto Collision program won $15,000 in new tools and equipment after being selected in the Dewalt and Hubbard Supply Classroom Makeover Contest; the award will benefit students in auto collision and other trade programs starting next school year. MLive
- ➤ The Alice and Jack Wirt Library in Bay City will host the Pups & Pages program on Saturday, May 16 (2 to 3 p.m.) in the Children’s Program Room to let children aged 4 to 12 practice reading with certified therapy dogs. Registration is required and closes at 1:45 p.m. MLive
- ➤ Michigan's Department of Education announced Tuesday that its new Office of Curriculum and Instruction will boost math and reading lessons while also supporting science and social studies at local schools (state superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko said the office will aid districts in following new literacy and dyslexia laws). - ➤ Essexville Garber swept archrival John Glenn in both baseball and softball on May 8. The team reached 20 wins as dominating hits and strong pitching led to mercy rule wins while John Glenn struggled in a 12-game losing streak. MLive
- ➤ The Detroit Pistons will face the Cavaliers in Game 6 at Rocket Arena in Cleveland on Friday, May 15 at 7 p.m. on Prime Video, as the series is tied 2-2 and the game will decide which team risks elimination. MLive
- ➤ Mike Schacher, a 47-year-old special education teacher, has been named varsity boys basketball coach at Bay City Central, where he previously served as an assistant. He aims to turn around a program marked by five coaches in five seasons — bringing his ties and mentorship to improve behavior and academics. MLive
