COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Keith Markstrom and Mike Jamrog, founders of Bay Veterans Foundation, received the Liberty Bell Award on May 8 at a Law Day luncheon at the DoubleTree hotel in Bay City. The Army veterans founded their nonprofit in 2015 and now volunteer to help local veterans (community support).  MLive
  • Dog owners can bring their pets to splash + socialize at the free Soggy Doggy event tomorrow from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Haithco park, located at 2000 McCarty Road in Saginaw County.  MLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Owners of H2O’s Waterside Grill and O’s Pub & Grill bought Tavern on Main on April 27 with plans to reopen it as O’s Mid & Main in early June. The restaurant (101 E. Main St.) will serve food daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and hire new workers.  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Bay City were at $4.69 per gallon on Monday, with state data showing a slight drop compared to last week but still higher than last year; experts predict a rise early next week (De Haan cited oil price pressures).  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Four Bay City schools earned designations from the Michigan Green Schools program this academic year by completing recycling, energy and outreach activities. Bay City Western High and Western Middle earned top marks; Bay City Central earned Emerald status; and Handy Middle received Green recognition.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Saginaw Township Police Department will honor nine officers and four civilians at its awards ceremony on May 14 at New Life Saginaw Church at 5 p.m. Awards include the Officer of the Year for Detective Scott Jackson and the Lifetime Meritorious Service for Lt. Chris Fredenburg — a recognition of 25 years of service.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Saginaw County Health Department celebrated National Public Health Week by awarding Hurley J. Coleman III with the Richard Calley Distinguished Service Award for his community leadership at the Community Action Committee (recognized for innovative public health work).  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bay City Athlete of the Week for May 11 honors standout high school athletes from track, softball, soccer and other sports, spotlighting top performances from local teams. The online poll (accepting votes until 8 p.m. Thursday) remains open for community input.  MLive
  • High school sports in Bay County turned record-breaking over May 8-10, with Essexville Garber’s softball team hitting six home runs in a game and Bay City Central’s soccer star setting a scoring record; today, Bay City Central hosts Bay City Western at 4 p.m. as teams continue to battle.  MLive
