  • City leaders in Owosso approved a plan that will raise water rates by 167% over five years to fund $207 million in overdue infrastructure repairs, and Bay City was awarded a $500,000 state grant to improve Carroll Park. A 17-year-old was charged after a suspicious fire at the Homeboy Barbeque in Clayton Township, over 1,000 measles cases have been reported nationwide with nine in Michigan, and Saginaw County Animal Care on Bay Road urged more adoptions in its 'Empty the Shelters' promotion before May 15.  WNEM

CRIME NEWS

  • A Midland County man, Zachary Brown (40 and a self-described patriot), is charged with a federal felony for threatening to kill Social Security Administration employees while submitting an online disability claim on April 14 and was released on a $10,000 bond with a preliminary examination set for August 20.  MLive

  • This Mother's Day weekend, a Taylor Swift laser light show will run at Longway Planetarium in Flint on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., and a Flower Full Moon Hike is set at For-Mar Nature Preserve in Burton on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. — Tribute performances honoring Elvis on Friday and Sinatra on Saturday will take place at the State Theatre in Bay City at 7 p.m., while Dave Dyer headlines a comedy show at Timothy’s Pub in Flint at 8 p.m. and Alice Cooper rocks at the Dow Event Center in Saginaw at 8 p.m.  MLive
  • Bishop Robert Gruss said he is grateful that Pope Leo the XIV was elected as the first American-born pope and hopes he leads the church with a missionary spirit—he urged local Catholics to pray for guidance. A mass to celebrate the new pope will be held on May 11 at 5 p.m. at the Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption.  WNEM

  • Today the Dollar General Literacy Foundation is awarding $29,200 to schools, libraries and nonprofits in mid-Michigan that are within 15 miles of a Dollar General store—helping groups like Caseville Public Schools and Iosco Regional Educational Service Agency buy new technology, books and software—to boost local literacy programs.  WNEM
