- ➤ The freighter Sam Laud, known from the baseball movie Major League, visited the Saginaw River on April 10—unloading stone at the Wirt Stone Dock in Bay City before moving upriver to deliver more of its load at Saginaw. It became the first Great Lakes freighter of the shipping season and its cargo is likely headed for Michigan Sugar. MLive
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Bay County began its spring aerial mosquito treatment on Friday with four yellow and white aircraft departing from James Clements Airport. The aircraft released Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis over wooded areas from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. for seven to ten days to control mosquito larvae. Mid Michigan NOW

- ➤ At City Hall on April 7, officials upheld a veto on a controversial immigration resolution while chewed gum created a sticky situation in the historic commission chambers. Staff spent hours cleaning the building (listed on the National Register) as residents saw the unusual event. MLive
- ➤ Michigan’s new surrogacy law now allows Bay City mother Nicole Horneber to serve as a surrogate for a couple affected by cancer—this law gives surrogates a chance to earn more than $50,000. Nicole and her husband once worried after a cancer diagnosis threatened their plans, but they raised four healthy children over the last six years. MLive
- ➤ The Bay County Board of Commissioners will vote on hiring a special prosecutor to handle 100+ criminal cases at risk of dismissal because of conflicts after a recent leadership change. Macomb County Assistant Prosecutor Jurij D. Fedorak is proposed to work at the Bay County court if the board approves his hiring on April 15. MLive
