- ➤ Records show the nonprofit managing the downtown DoubleTree lost money every year from 2014 to 2022—recording over $1 million in losses annually, including nearly $2 million in 2020—and the hotel was foreclosed on March 28 and sold to BCM Hotel LLC for $20 million with operations remaining unchanged. - ➤ The Arts Center at Studio 23 opened the new Access•ABILITY exhibit on April 3—located at 901 N. Water St. in downtown Bay City—and the show will run until June 7. The exhibit features interactive art that explores disability, accessibility and universal design through tactile displays, sensory-friendly hours and hands-on workshops. MLive
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Michigan Head Start Association said that the Region 5 office was abruptly closed on April 1 and federal staff were placed on administrative leave until June. The office shutdown may delay funding and oversight for programs that serve 29,000 children in Michigan and other states. WNEM

- ➤ Bay City's lawyers will meet with commissioners in closed session on Monday, April 7 to review a legal opinion on whether the city broke its contract with United Bridge Partners—along with a class action lawsuit filed by local attorneys. MLive
- ➤ Michigan’s unemployment benefits increased for new claims filed April 2 or later — the maximum weekly benefit rises by $84 to $446, the claim period extends from 20 to 26 weeks, and payments per dependent are doubled. Governor Whitmer signed the law in December 2024, and state officials noted this is the first boost since 2002 while claimants are advised to check their MiWAM accounts for updates. Mid Michigan NOW
