- ➤ Dan Streeter of Rescue Ministries said the renovated overnight drop-in center at Good Samaritan Rescue Mission has 35 warm spots and already sheltered 23 individuals amid a prolonged cold stretch in Bay City. The shelter runs from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. daily and may extend its hours for safety. WNEM
- ➤ Great Lakes Dream Center, a Bay City nonprofit, has applied for a United Way Community Investment grant to fund a homelessness response team that will coordinate outreach and volunteer training for residents without evening transportation to the drop-in center. If approved by May or June, the funds will be available in July to connect unhoused individuals with local resources. WNEM
- ➤ Four community leaders including Nicole Luczak, Jennifer Vannette, and Jack and Janet Nash will receive the Drum Major Award for Community Service during the 17th Annual MLK Celebration on Thursday, Jan. 22 at Saginaw Valley State University at 7 p.m. in the Malcolm Field Theatre. MLive
- ➤ Habitat for Humanity volunteers built about 50 bunk beds for local children in need during MLK Day of Service (Monday, Jan. 19). The beds, complete with an extended mattress, sheets, and a blanket, were constructed with help from area non-profits, students, and contractors through the Sleep in Heavenly Peace program. - ➤ Bay City's doctor warns that the extreme cold and wind will increase risk of hypothermia and frostbite today and into the coming week. Residents should dress in a three-layer system (inner layer to wick moisture, middle to insulate, outer to block wind) and warm up with hot fluids when outdoors. WNEM

- ➤ Saginaw Spirit forward Nikita Klepov earned both OHL Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors for Jan. 12-18. The Spirit (16-20-3-4) will begin a three-game road trip on Thursday at Peterborough, then play at Kingston on Friday and at Ottawa on Sunday. MLive
